About Cycle to Work schemes
What is it?
The Cycle to Work scheme is a UK Government initiative designed to make commuting more affordable and eco-friendly by saving you money on a new electric or traditional bike. The cost of your new bicycle is spread over several months, paid in tax-free instalments via your employer.
Simply choose a bike, hire it for an agreed period from your employer, and then purchase it for a fraction of its original price.
Who can apply?
If you are employed, paid through PAYE, over the age of 16, and your employer is part of a Cycle to Work scheme, you are eligible to apply. Note that your salary after eBike deductions must not fall below the National Living Wage or National Minimum Wage.

What is the Cycle to Work Scheme?
The Cycle to Work Scheme is a UK government initiative that allows employees to purchase bikes and cycling equipment through a salary sacrifice arrangement. This makes the purchase tax-free, saving on income tax and National Insurance contributions.

How do I redeem a voucher at Glide & Gear?
Simply send us an email at info@glideandgear.co.uk with the following information:
- Copy of the voucher/Loc
- Confirmation of which bike (including variant) you are interested in.
- Delivery details, including name, email, shipping address and phone number.
- ID Proof (driver's license, utility bill etc.)
Once you send us this information, we can begin processing your order.
Who is eligible for the Cycle to Work Scheme?
The scheme is open to all employees paid through the PAYE system. It is not available to the self-employed or employees on the National Minimum Wage, as salary sacrifice cannot reduce their earnings below the minimum wage threshold.
What can I buy through the Cycle to Work Scheme?
You can purchase bicycles, including e-bikes, and a range of cycling safety equipment such as helmets, lights, locks, and reflective clothing. The scheme covers any cycle that helps you commute, including non-standard cycles like tricycles and adapted cycles for disabilities.
How do I sign up for the Cycle to Work Scheme?
To join, your employer must be registered with a scheme provider. Once registered, you choose your equipment and submit an application through your employer. After approval, you receive a voucher to redeem for the bike. Your voucher (sometimes called a letter of collection) is what you will use in lieu of payment with us when purchasing with a cycle to work scheme.
How do the payments work?
Payments are made through salary sacrifice, meaning they are deducted from your gross salary before tax. This reduces your taxable income, leading to savings on income tax and National Insurance. Payments are spread over an agreed period, typically 12 - 24 months.
Can I use the bike for personal use?
Yes, while the bike should primarily be used for commuting, you can also use it for personal activities.
What happens at the end of the hire period?
At the end of the hire period, you can choose to return the bike, buy it at a fair market value, or extend the hire period. Most providers offer the option to buy the bike at a significantly reduced price after the initial hire period.
What if I leave my job during the hire period?
If you leave your job, you may be required to pay the remaining balance in full. It’s advisable to check your employer’s policies regarding early termination of the hire agreement.
Are there any limits on how much I can spend?
There is no longer a strict limit on the value of the equipment you can purchase. However, your employer may set a maximum limit based on their policies and the needs of the workforce.
Do I need insurance for my bike?
While not mandatory, it is recommended to insure your bike against theft or damage, as you will be liable for repayments even if the bike is stolen or written off during the hire period.
