Legal Information
What are the laws regarding Electric Scooters?
Electric scooters are legal to purchase and own but currently, they may not be used on public roads, footpaths, or cycle lanes in the UK. They can be ridden on private land with the landowner's permission.
There are plans to legalise their use in public spaces with certain restrictions soon. It's the customer's responsibility to comply with all national and local laws when operating an electric scooter.
Glide & Gear is not liable for any legal issues that arise from the use of our e-scooters. For more, refer to our legal guide.
What are the laws regarding Electric Bikes?
Electric bikes (e-bikes) that are pedal-assisted and have a motor up to 250W are legal to use on public roads without requiring insurance or a licence.
The maximum speed is limited to 15.5mph. Riders must be at least 14 years old. Wearing helmets, while not mandatory, is highly recommended for your safety. For more information, refer to our legal guide.
Is insurance necessary for my e-bike?
If your bike has a motor under 250W, legally, no. But we strongly recommend having insurance to protect against theft and accidental damage.
When you purchase a road legal EAPC or pedal bike from Glide & Gear, you are eligible for 14 days of free bicycle insurance cover. Click here for more information.
Do I need a licence for an Electric Bike?
No licence is required in the UK to ride an electric bike, as long as you're over 14 years old. There's no need for registration or vehicle tax either.
An e-bike qualifies as an "electrically assisted pedal cycle" (EAPC) if it meets these conditions:
- It has pedals for propulsion.
- The motor ceases to assist beyond 25 km/h (15.5 mph).
- The motor's power doesn't exceed 250 watts.
E-bikes meeting these criteria can be used on cycle paths and all usual bike areas. However, off-road e-bikes capable of exceeding 15.5 mph aren't compliant with EAPC on-road regulations.
If an e-bike has a motor over 250W or assists above 15.5 mph, it's considered a motor vehicle and must be registered, insured, and taxed accordingly. This also necessitates a driving licence and wearing a motorcycle helmet.
Are e-bikes safe?
Absolutely, electric bikes are just as safe as traditional bicycles, if not safer! The pedal assist feature ensures you exert less effort while pedalling, keeping you less fatigued and more alert to your surroundings. This increased alertness is crucial for safety on the roads. Additionally, the ability to accelerate quickly at junctions and maintain pace with traffic enhances your visibility and safety. Climbing hills becomes significantly easier, reducing the chance you'll be breathless and distracted.
Am I required to wear a helmet whilst riding an e-bike or e-scooter?
There is no legal requirement to wear a helmet. However, we strongly recommend that you do to avoid any risk of injury.
Product Information
Can I use an Electric Bike in the rain?
Yes, most electric bikes are designed to be water-resistant, allowing you to ride in the rain and through puddles.
However, it's important to check the manufacturer's instructions for specifics on water resistance. Avoid using power washers to clean your bike.
For details on water resistance levels, refer to the IP rating in the specification section on our product pages.
Can I use my e-bike without the motor?
Electric bikes can be ridden without turning on the motor, functioning just like traditional bicycles. Though the motor and battery add extra weight, making the ride feel slightly heavier, you can still enjoy a smooth ride without assistance.
Are Electric Bikes heavy?
Our electric bikes range from 14.5kg to 28kg. To find out the specific weight of each model, please check the specification section on the product page.
Do I need to get my e-bike serviced?
To ensure optimal performance, we suggest servicing your electric bike every 6-12 months, depending on how frequently you use it. It's also beneficial to have it checked after the first six weeks to address any early concerns and gain useful maintenance tips. While Glide & Gear doesn't offer servicing, we have partnered with CycleTech UK that allows you to access skilled technicians right to your doorstep. Contact us for more informaiton.
Can I Charge My E-bike Battery Overnight?
Yes, our e-bikes and e-scooters are equipped with a battery management system that stops charging once the battery is full. It's beneficial to charge your battery regularly to maintain its health and extend its lifespan.
Can I remove my e-bike battery for charging?
Most of our e-bikes allow you to remove the battery for charging, making it more convenient. Some models have integrated batteries that aren't removable but are designed to be charged on the bike. For e-scooters, the battery is usually not removable. Check your specific model's manual for details.
How long does it take for the battery to charge?
Charge times for our e-bikes and e-scooters vary, typically ranging from 3 to 8 hours for a full charge from empty.
For specific charge times, refer to the product's user manual or the information on our website.
What is the expect range of the battery?
The range you'll get from your e-bike's battery depends on its capacity, which is detailed in the specification tab on our product pages. Factors such as terrain, rider weight, tyre pressure, and headwind can affect the actual range.
How do I ride an E-Bike?
Riding an electric bike is similar to a traditional bike. Start pedalling to engage the motor for a boost and continue pedalling to keep the motor active. Use the brakes to stop.
It's important to select the correct gear before starting and ensure the motor and battery are powered on.
cycle to work schemes
What is the Cycle to Work Scheme?
The Cycle to Work Scheme is a UK government initiative that allows employees to purchase bikes and cycling equipment through a salary sacrifice arrangement. This makes the purchase tax-free, saving on income tax and National Insurance contributions.
Does Glide & Gear accept any cycle to work schemes?
Yes! At Glide & Gear, we currently accept the following cycle to work schemes:
- Cycle Scheme
- Cycle Solutions
- GoGeta
- My Benefits World
- Bike2Work Scheme
- Caboodle
- Halfords' Cycle2Work
We can also accept any other scheme in certain circumstances. Please contact us via the contact form below for more information.
How do I redeem a voucher at Glide & Gear?
Simply send us an email at info@glideandgear.co.uk with the following information:
- Copy of the voucher/Loc
- Confirmation of which bike (including variant) you are interested in.
- Delivery details, including name, email, shipping address and phone number.
- ID Proof (driver's license, utility bill etc.)
Once you send us this information, we can begin processing your order.
Who is eligible for the Cycle to Work Scheme?
The scheme is open to all employees paid through the PAYE system. It is not available to the self-employed or employees on the National Minimum Wage, as salary sacrifice cannot reduce their earnings below the minimum wage threshold.
What can I buy through the Cycle to Work Scheme?
You can purchase bicycles, including e-bikes, and a range of cycling safety equipment such as helmets, lights, locks, and reflective clothing. The scheme covers any cycle that helps you commute, including non-standard cycles like tricycles and adapted cycles for disabilities.
How do I sign up for the Cycle to Work Scheme?
To join, your employer must be registered with a scheme provider. Once registered, you choose your equipment and submit an application through your employer. After approval, you receive a voucher to redeem for the bike. Your voucher (sometimes called a letter of collection) is what you will use in lieu of payment with us when purchasing with a cycle to work scheme.
How do the payments work?
Payments are made through salary sacrifice, meaning they are deducted from your gross salary before tax. This reduces your taxable income, leading to savings on income tax and National Insurance. Payments are spread over an agreed period, typically 12 - 24 months.
Can I use the bike for personal use?
Yes, while the bike should primarily be used for commuting, you can also use it for personal activities.
What happens at the end of the hire period?
At the end of the hire period, you can choose to return the bike, buy it at a fair market value, or extend the hire period. Most providers offer the option to buy the bike at a significantly reduced price after the initial hire period.
What if I leave my job during the hire period?
If you leave your job, you may be required to pay the remaining balance in full. It’s advisable to check your employer’s policies regarding early termination of the hire agreement.
Are there any limits on how much I can spend?
There is no longer a strict limit on the value of the equipment you can purchase. However, your employer may set a maximum limit based on their policies and the needs of the workforce.
Do I need insurance for my bike?
While not mandatory, it is recommended to insure your bike against theft or damage, as you will be liable for repayments even if the bike is stolen or written off during the hire period.
