Direct vs Cycle to Work Scheme: What’s the Smarter Way to Buy Your Bike?

Whether you're a daily commuter, a weekend adventurer, or just looking to get fitter on two wheels, buying a new bike is an exciting investment. But with so many ways to purchase, it raises a key question: should you buy your bike direct in the UK, or go through a cycle to work scheme?

At Glide & Gear, we know this decision isn’t just about wheels and gears—it’s about what works best for your lifestyle, finances, and long-term goals. Let’s explore the pros and cons of both approaches, backed by the latest data and insights from the UK’s top cycling sources.

What You Get with a Cycle to Work Scheme

Cycle to work schemes have been around since 1999, offering tax-free bikes and accessories through salary sacrifice. The idea is simple: you spread the cost of your new bike over 12–48 months and make repayments directly from your gross salary. This means you avoid income tax and National Insurance on the amount.

Key Benefits:

  • Save 32–47% depending on your tax bracket.
  • No upfront cost – payments are split monthly.
  • Big-name retailers and brands available across schemes like Cyclescheme, Halfords, and Green Commute Initiative.
  • E-bike, cargo bikes and accessories included.
  • Environmental and health perks that align with employer ESG goals.
  • End of Scheme Realities:

Cycle to work schemes are technically hire agreements, so you don't own the bike outright at the end. You’ll typically need to:

  • Make a final payment of up to 25% of the bike’s value after 12 months, or
  • Opt for an extended hire agreement and pay 3–7% later, securing full ownership after 4 years.

Even schemes with zero-cost extensions (like Gogeta) will usually calculate this ownership based on fair market value per HMRC rules. You’ll need to stay informed and plan ahead.

Employer Limitations:

While the official spend cap has been lifted, many employers still set upper limits. If you're eyeing a premium e-bike or custom commuter setup, this can be restrictive. Likewise, the scheme isn’t accessible to freelancers or those earning near the National Minimum Wage.

If you leave your job before the agreement ends? You may be required to settle the outstanding balance in full.

If you prefer flexibility, clarity, and immediate ownership, buying your bike direct in the UK could be a smarter route—especially with Glide & Gear's custom discount model.

  • Immediate bike ownership.
  • Access to discounted finance options for flexible payments.
  • Fast UK-wide delivery on commuter bikes, hybrids and folding e-bikes.

No spend caps. No pre-approval delays. No reliance on your workplace’s HR policy.

  • Direct with Glide & Gear: A £1,200 e-bike bought direct at 7% off costs £1116 up front or on flexible finance—and it’s 100% yours from day one.

When you add in the convenience, lack of red tape, and seasonal sale access, buying direct can match or beat scheme savings without the hassle.

Final Verdict: Which Option Should You Choose?

There’s no doubt that the UK cycle to work scheme has helped millions of people access bikes affordably. For many employees, especially higher-rate taxpayers with generous HR support, it’s a brilliant scheme.

But if you’re:

  • Self-employed
  • On a short-term contract
  • Earning near the minimum wage
  • Keen on instant ownership
  • Looking to customise your commuter bike or
  • Just want to avoid the admin and delays…

…then buying direct is likely the smarter way to go.
